CBI Chief Alok Verma Removed by PM Narendra Modi-Led Selection Panel
Alok Verma removed as Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) chief by the high-selection committee chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
New Delhi, January 10: Alok Verma on Thursday removed as Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) chief by the high-selection committee chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The decision was taken after a high profile meeting in PM Modi's residence to decide Verma's future. The former CBI chief has now been transferred to the fire service department as DG. Just hours before his removal, Verma ordered the transfer of five officers.
The panel was comprised of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Justice A.K. Sikri and leader of Opposition Mallikarjun Kharge. According to reports, during the meeting, Kharge opposed the removal of Verma as CBI chief and demanded another chance for Verma. On Wednesday, the meeting of the panel ended inconclusively. Meanwhile, the Delhi High Court will pronounce its verdict tomorrow on a petition filed by CBI Special Director Rakesh Asthana and DSP Devendra Kumar seeking quashing of the FIR against them. On Tuesday, the Supreme Court reinstated CBI Director Alok Kumar Verma, setting aside the Centre's decision to divest him of his powers, but restrained him from taking any major policy decision till the CVC probe into corruption charges against him is over. The apex court said any further decision against Verma, who was sent on leave following the Centre's October 23 decision and retires on January 31, would be taken by the high-powered committee which selects and appoints the CBI director.
