New Delhi, September 26: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Thursday made it's first arrested in connection with the Narada scam. A senior Indian Police Service (IPS) officer S M H Mirza was arrested after the 2016 Narada sting operation showed several Trinamool Congress leaders, besides Mirza, allegedly taking cash for favours. Mirza was then posted as Superintendent of Police of Burdwan district in West Bengal when the sting was conducted by Narada News. In the clip, he was seen accepting money on behalf of politicians. Thirteen people were seen in the Narada tapes, including Member of Parliaments, four ministers, an MLA and an IPS officer. Over the past few days, CBI officials took voice samples of several TMC leaders in connection with the scam.
Last month, Mathew Samuels, who was the chief executive of Narada News, was questioned by the agency jointly with TMC MP KD Singh, who claimed that he funded the sting. "He specifically told me to focus on Abhishek Banerjee, Mamata's Banerjee's nephew," Samuel told CBI, reported NDTV.
The sting operation was conducted in 2014 by Samuels posing as a businessman. In the tapes, he was seen offering money to Trinamool leaders. The video clips came to be known as Narada scandal. The clips were aired before 2016 Bengal election. In 50-plus hours of footage, thirteen people were seen taking a total of Rs 60.5 lakh.
