Bengaluru, August 10: In a tragic incident, a 50-year-old woman died of rabies after being bitten by a domestic cat in Tarlaghatta village in Shikaripur taluk of Karnataka's Shivamogga. The incident has raised concerns among residents and authorities about the dangers of pet attacks.
According to a report published by News18, the deceased woman was identified as Gangibai. Two months ago, Gangibai was bitten on her leg by a pet cat that had previously attacked a youth in a camp in Tarlaghatta. Following the bite, she received only one injection and did not complete the full course of rabies vaccinations. This negligence ultimately led to her death, as confirmed by medical professionals. What is Rabies?
Rabies is typically transmitted through the saliva of an infected animal coming into contact with the mucous membranes of another animal or human. While dog bites are the most common cause of rabies in humans, this case highlights the risk posed by cat bites as well. According to a recent report by the World Health Organisation (WHO), cat bites account for 2–50 percent of animal bite injuries globally, second only to dog bites. The report states, “Cat bites are associated with rabies viral infections and several bacterial infections related to Bartonella, brucella, leptospira, and campylobacter species. The likelihood of a cat bite becoming infected is double that of a dog bite.”
