CAA Protests in Uttar Pradesh: Mobile Internet Services Suspended in Several Districts As State Prepares for Friday Protests

The Uttar Pradesh government has ordered the suspension of internet connectivity in 12 districts until Friday evening in anticipation of protest against the new Citizenship Law. As per the latest reports, a total of 327 First Information Report (FIR) have been registered across Uttar Pradesh in connection with the violence during anti-CAA protests.

Lucknow, December 27: The Uttar Pradesh government has ordered the suspension of internet connectivity in 12 districts until Friday evening in anticipation of protest against the new Citizenship Law. As per the latest reports, a total of 327 First Information Report (FIR) have been registered across Uttar Pradesh in connection with the violence during anti-CAA protests. Internet services was suspended in Bulandshahar, Bijnor, Meerut, Muzaffarnagar, Agra, Firozabad, Aligarh, Sambhal, Rampur, Sitapur, Ghaziabad and Kanpur. In state capital Lucknow too, mobile internet services and SMS messages of all mobile service providers except BSNL are suspended. Anti-CAA Protests: Students Resorting to Violence Are Not Leaders, Says Indian Army Chief General Bipin Rawat.

"We've deployed security personnel in different districts of the state and held talks with the people. Internet services have been suspended in eight districts for a day, and we're also monitoring content on social media," senior police officer PV Ramasastry was quoted as saying by news agency ANI.

Violence was reported in several parts of the state between December 19 and 21, claiming lives of as many as 19 protesters. Although most of the bodies bore gunshot injuries, the UP police insisted they only shoot plastic pellets and rubber bullets. However, they owned up open firing in Bijnore, where a 20-year-old IAS aspirant was killed.
