Chennai, December 17: Days after a police crackdown in Delhi’s Jamia Millia Islamia University, the Chennai Police on Tuesday entered the Madras university campus during a students' protest against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA). According to a report by NDTV, the protest was  interrupted as students launched a widespread protest and launched demonstrations on Tuesday. The students have been holding agitation for the last two days over the law and the police action in Delhi on the students of JMI.

On Tuesday, the national capital witnessed fresh violent protests over the contentious Citizenship (Amendment) Act. Students across the nation took to streets over the recently demanding a probe into the use of teargas inside JMI university’s library. Since Sunday, students of the Jamia Miiia university in the national capital have been protesting over the CAA. The protest took a violent turn as five buses were torched. However, the Jamia Millia students refuted the claims that students were involved in violent protests. Similar protests were witnessed in Lucknow’s Nadwa College, where scores of students gathered and protested over the CAA. The CAA got the President's nod last Thursday after Citizenship (Amendment) Bill was passed by Parliament in the recently concluded winter session. The Act applies to migrants from six non-Muslim communities -- Hindu, Sikh, Buddhist, Jain, Parsi and Christian -- who have fled to India from Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan till December 31, 2014, due to religious persecution.
