New Delhi, December 16: A day after the brutal crackdown by the police at Jamia Millia Islamia and Aligarh Muslim University - the two varsities protesting against the amended citizenship law - students of ten major institutes rose up in agitation. Campuses of several varsities across the nation witnessed turbulent scenes on Monday as students' unions marked their dissent against the alleged suppression of dissenting voices in Jamia and AMU. Jamia Millia Islamia Protest Against Citizenship Amendment Act Draws National Attention: What We Know So Far.

In the national capital, the protests have now spread to Maulana Azad Medical College (MAMC), where the students boycotted the classes and staged a demonstration against the Citizenship Amendment Act. In neighbouring Uttar Pradesh, students of the Darul Uloom Nadwatul Ulama in Lucknow protested in the campus against the crackdown on their counterparts in AMU and Jamia.

In Punjab, students of the Chandigarh University staged a protest against the CAA, calling the law "divisive". The law, if not retracted, would end up irreversibly dividing the nation, the students said, adding that the Muslim community could be targeted using the law following the pan-India NRC exercise.

In Uttar Pradesh's Varanasi, students affiliated to Left unions protested against the CAA in Banaras Hindu University (BHU) campus. Similar agitations were also reported in Kolkata's Jadavpur University. In Guwahati's Tezpur University, the students affiliated to All Assam Students' Union (AASU) continued their agitation against the law which aims to naturalise non-Muslim refugees.

The demonstrations inside campus were also organised in Hyderabad's Maulana Azad National Urdu University (MANUU), Mumbai's Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS) and Bengaluru's Indian Institute of Sciences (IISC). At the IIT-Madras, where the students took out a rally, classes were boycotted enmasse to mark their dissent against the citizenship law.
