The state government has decided to take land forcefully in the next two months under the Land Acquisition Act, reported Mumbai Mirror. This means that there will be no more negotiations with the landowners. March 2019 was the deadline for the land acquisition, however, it was slowed down or stalled due opposition of Bullet train, reported Mumbai Mirror. Now after Prime Minister Modi getting another term, the BJP's pet project has been rebooted. For this, officials from the forest department, Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation, revenue department among others met Cheif Secretary Ajoy Mehta.
An official who attended the meeting told Mumbai Mirror that, “The government will immediately go in for compulsory land acquisition and there won’t be any negotiations with the landowners. After acquiring the land, the legitimate compensation will be granted to the owner through cheques or directly in the bank account. Meanwhile, the activists are opposing this move and say that its a violation with the agreement with JICA (Japan International Cooperation Agency), which is funding the project.
The Mumbai-Ahmedabad Bullet Train route is a 508 kilometres long project which will include 21 km long tunnel underneath the sea. The project will cost around Rs 1 lakh crore, including Rs 3,500 crore for the tunnel itself. The project will affect 120 villages in Maharashtra and 192 villages in Gujarat. The forest and mangroves cover between Thane and Dahanu will also be impacted.
