BSP MP Atul Rai, Accused in Rape Case, Surrenders Before Varanasi Court; Sent to 14-Day Judicial Custody
Atul Rai, Member of Parliament from Uttar Pradesh's Ghoshi constituency surrendered in a Varanasi court on Saturday. Rai is an accused in many cases, including that of rape and kidnapping. Rai had defeated then BJP sitting MP Harinarayan Rajbhar with a margin of 1,22,018 votes.
Varanasi, June 22: Atul Rai, Member of Parliament from Uttar Pradesh's Ghosi Lok Sabha constituency surrendered in a Varanasi court on Saturday. Rai was sent to 14-day judicial custody. He is an accused in many cases, including that of rape and kidnapping. Earlier this week, the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) MP had moved a surrender application in the court. A lookout notice was issued against Rai and the Varanasi court had also declared him a proclaimed offender. The MP who went underground after the case was filed, had tried to secure anticipatory bail from the Supreme Court. The BSP MP from Ghosi has not taken an oath in the Lok Sabha yet. According to reports, last week, police had pasted a copy of the court order at the Rai’s addresses in Ghazipur and Varanasi. The rape case against the MP was registered on May 1 at Lanka police station. The Uttar Pradesh Police had also attached the house of Rai for not presenting himself before the court. As per reports, a woman had alleged that Rai had sexually harassed her. According to the case filed against Rai, he took the woman to a flat and exploited her sexually. She also alleged that Rai had forced her to keep silent on the matter. The Police moved court and obtained a non-bailable warrant after Rai absconded. Rai had defeated then BJP sitting MP Harinarayan Rajbhar with a margin of 1,22,018 votes.
