Bengaluru, August 5: Karnataka Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa on Monday requested his Maharashtra counterpart Devendra Fadnavis to direct concerned authorities to regulate water discharge from the state’s Koyna reservoir. Yediyurappa in a letter expressed concerns over flood-like situation in districts of Northern Karnataka as the water from the reservoir is being discharged in Krishna river. Karnataka CM BS Yediyurappa Conducts Aerial Survey of Flood Affected Areas.

In the letter, Yediyurappa wrote, “Due to heavy discharge from Maharashtra's Koyna reservoir, the northern Karnataka districts are severely affected by the flood discharge in Krishna river and situation is severely alarming.” The Karnataka CM also requested Fadnavis to take action at the earliest. Mahabaleshwar Becomes Rainiest Place with 241 mm Rainfall in 24 Hours.

Meanwhile, hundreds of villages in North Karnataka were inundated following release of over 2 lakh cusecs of water from Koyna dam in neighbouring Maharashtra on Sunday. Heavy rains in these areas also made the situation worse. Till now no loss of life has been reported. According to reports, five districts-- Belagavi, Bagalkot, Raichur, Vijayapuram and Yadgir have been badly affected by the swollen Krishna river, Malaprabha, Markandeya river and a few other rivulets.

People living in flood-prone areas along the Krishna river have been shifted to safer places. Road and railway transport was also affected due to soil erosion in Belagavi district.
