Panaji, December 20: A 48-year-old British woman tourist was allegedly raped by an unidentified man while she was going towards a beach in Goa’s southernmost town of Canacona around 4 am on Thursday. The accused also robbed her of belongings before fleeing from the spot. As per reports, the incident took place around 4 when the woman was going towards the Palolem beach in South Goa district. The incident once again raised security concerns of foreign nationals in Goa as it is not the first time when a foreigner was raped in India's tourist capital. In 2008, a 15-year-old British girl Scarlett Keeling who was on a six-month vacation with her family was raped and left to die at Anjuna beach by two beach shack hands who allegedly also spiked her drinks. In 2016, a Goa court acquitted both the accused of rape and culpable homicide.
In March 2017, 28-year old Irish woman Danielle McLaughlin from Buncrana, Co Donegal was also raped in Canacona. Her body found lying in a pool of blood. Police arrested a 23-year-old local who later confessed to his crime.
In a similar incident in May this year, a woman tourist was sexually assaulted by three men at an isolated beach in the southern region of Goa. Reports claimed the victim was gangraped by the trio at Sernabatim beach, located in South Goa district -- 50km away from state capital Panaji. Obscene pictures were also taken by them, apart from looting their money and personal belongings.
