Bread Price Hike in Mumbai: Prices of Sliced White Bread Increased by Rs 2-8 per Loaf, Here's Why
A 50 kilogramme bag of maida now costs Rs 1,700 instead of the previous Rs 1,500. That is Rs. 34 per kilogramme as opposed to Rs. 30 earlier. Since maida makes up 80% of our raw materials, confectioners are forced to pass along the price increase to the customer.
Mumbai, September 12: Due to the rising cost of maida (refined flour), the price of sliced white bread has jumped from Rs 2 to Rs 8 a loaf, dealing a significant blow to the daily household budget. Starting September 8, major producers, including Britannia, Wibs, and Modern increased their pricing.
The price of the standard white bread, which weighs 350–400 gms, has increased from Rs 35 to Rs 38. The price of the tiny 200 gm loaf has increased from Rs. 18 to Rs 20. There are two types of huge white breads - one weighs around 600–650 g and was formerly priced between Rs. 52–55. It is now rounded to Rs 60. The 800 gramme loaf of Wibs white bread, which is used by sandwich sellers, is the other big loaf. It now costs Rs 75 instead of Rs 70. The present increase has not touched any of the brown breads though.
