Chennai, August 26: Tensions prevailed in Vedaranyam town of Tamil Nadu’s Nagapattinam district on Sunday evening after BR Ambedkar’s statue was vandalised. According to reports, the statue was demolished following a clash between two caste groups. Two people were also injured in the clashes. To control the situation, armed policemen were sent to the spot. As per a report published in The Hindu, the clashes took place after a Dalit man was injured in a road accident. A person belonging to a dominant Hindu community was driving the vehicle which hit the Dalit man. The supporters of the injured person set the vehicle ablaze. As tensions soared in the area, shops in and around the area were closed, and bus services came to a standstill. Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi also staged protests across the state demanding strict punishment against the people who damaged the statue. However, the situation was brought under control after the statue was re-installed.
