Mumbai, August 22: Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) officials are all set to lose 50 percent of their salaries if the work they are overseeing doesn't meet their deadlines. A circular has been issued in this regard warning of a 50 percent salary cut. According to reports, the circular further stated that contractors will also lose 20 percent of the amount due to them if works get delayed. BMC to Impose Rs 10,000 Fine on Those Parking Vehicles Illegally Across Mumbai.
The BMC spends over Rs 10,000 crore on public works every year but fails to complete the work on time. This results in drastic losses. According to the new circular, engineers and contractors will become more accountable for their work. Most of the work allegedly gets delayed due to delay in clearances, administrative hurdles and interdepartmental lag.
RTI activist Anil Galgali, who has exposed several cases related to alleged corruption in BMC, said, "The civic body spends over Rs 10,000 crore every year on public works, but it has hardly met the deadline of any project. On the contrary, the projects are deliberately delayed to escalate its cost. This happens due to unholy nexus between engineers and contractors. Hope this initiative to cut salary would work and break the nexus."
BMC has recently imposed penalty from Rs 1,000 to Rs 10,000 on cars owners, parking their vehicles in no-parking zones. This new decision has been announced to give relief to motorists and emergency vehicles.
