Bengaluru, December 5: A scientist died after a suspected hydrogen cylinder blast at an aerospace lab at the Indian Institute of Science in Bengaluru on Wednesday afternoon. The deceased scientist was identified as 32-year-old Manoj Kumar, who was from Hyderabad.

The blast reportedly took place in the research laboratory of the Aerospace Department’s Laboratory for Hypersonic and Shockwave. Three others were critically injured in the explosion, news agency ANI reported. The blast was so intense that it threw Manoj Kumar, a post-graduate, against the wall and he died on the spot. The injured persons were identified as Atulya, Kartik and Naresh Kumar.

They were being treated at the MS Ramaiah Hospitals. The cause of the blast was yet to be ascertained. “Everything was flung in the laboratory, but there is no sign of gas or fire. But the force released was enough to kill a person on the spot,” an official told The Hindu.

Professor G Jagadeesh, who heads the department where the explosion took place, told a leading daily that the accident happened while creating a shock wave as part of an ongoing research project.
