Howrah, May 10: A youth BJP leader was arrested in West Bengal's Howrah in connection with an offensive social media post regarding Trinamool Congress supremo and Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. The BJP leader, Priyanka Sharma, posted a MET Gala 2019 theme meme morphing Mamata's face on Bollywood actress Priyanka Chopra's body. Sharma was booked and presented in Howrah Court. According to a report in DNA, Trinamool leader filed a complaint saying that morphing CM's pics was a serious crime and it was insulting Mamata Banerjee. The complaint was filed by Vibhas Hazra. In the Complaint, Hazra alleged that Priyanka Sharma "not just tried to insult our Hon'ble Chief Minister, but she trying to insult the culture of Bengal by her post on Facebook and which is a Cybercrime." According to reports, Sharma is the convenor Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM), the youth wing of the Bharatiya Janata Party, in Howrah district. She allegedly posted the morphed image on her Facebook page. Obscene Pictures of BJP MLA With Woman Goes Viral in Jammu And Kashmir.
This is not the first time that legal action is taken for an offensive post. In 2012, Ambikesh Mahapatra, a Jadavpur University chemistry professor, was arrested for circulating a spoof picture of Mamata Banerjee and railway minister Mukul Roy. Mahapatra, later said Trinamool supporters attacked his house and made him confess that he is a supporter of Communist Party of India (Marxist).
