Kolkata, December 20: Hours after the Calcutta High Court issued permission for the ‘Rath Yatra’ in West Bengal, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee-led state government has approached to Chief Justice's division bench challenging the single bench order. The matter would be placed before the bench on Friday.

Earlier in the day, the bench – led by Justice Tapabrata Chakraborty – directed the state BJP unit to inform the superintendents of police of the districts in which the rallies shall enter at least 12 hours ahead of schedule, reports PTI. The court also directed the saffron party to ensure that the ‘yatras’ are conducted abiding the law and not impede normal movement of vehicular traffic. In its order, the Calcutta High Court permitted the three yatras of BJP in West Bengal and directed that the administration should ensure that there is no breach of law and order.

Fearing violence like Bulandshahr, the West Bengal government on Saturday faxed their decision to the state BJP unit and stated that permission for the ‘yatras’ couldn’t be given. CM Banerjee herself chaired the meeting with the senior officials and police chiefs, and denied the permission.

Commenting on the courts’ allowing permission for the ‘yatras’, state BJP chief Dilip Ghosh said on Thursday, “We thank the court for its verdict. It is a historic one. The Gantantra Bachao Yatra will start very soon and will be held as per schedule.” Adding more, he said, “We have already submitted new dates, but we can adjust the dates accordingly. We will follow all the instructions given by the court.”

BJP’s state in-charge for West Bengal Kailash Vijayvargiya expressed his happiness on the verdict and said, “We welcome this decision, and we had trust on judiciary that we'll get justice. This decision is a slap on the face of tyranny. We haven't decided anything but I can assure that PM and party chief will join the yatra.”
