BJP Rath Yatra in West Bengal: Supreme Court Issues Notice to Mamata Banerjee Govt, Adjourns Matter Till Jan 15
BJP had challenged the decision of division bench of Calcutta High Court that halted the Rath Yatra by BJP in the state.
New Delhi, January 8: The Supreme Court on Tuesday issued a notice to Mamata Banerjee-led West Bengal government on BJP’s plea to conduct the Rath Yatra in the state. The apex court set the next hearing date for January 15.
Earlier the Supreme Court on January 2 had agreed to listen to the controversial matter on Tuesday, in which the BJP challenged the decision of division bench of Calcutta High Court that halted the Rath Yatra by BJP in the state. In the latest hearing, the apex court asked the state government to submit a revised schedule of Yatra too. BJP Rath Yatra in West Bengal: Supreme Court Agrees to Hear Plea Against Calcutta High Court’s Order on January 7.
The divisional bench of the Calcutta High Court in its verdict halted the BJP’s Rath Yatra in the state, based on government’s submitted documents which feared law and order issues if permission is given for the yatra. The state BJP unit challenged the matter after the TMC-led government denied permission for the Yatra in December and sent the fax to the saffron party’s office in Kolkata.
According to the plan, the BJP had sought permission to hold ‘Save Democracy Rally’ – commonly known as BJP’s Rath Yatra – which would cover 42 parliamentary constituencies in the state ahead of 2019 Lok Sabha elections.
However, Banerjee led government, after analysing reports from the district administrative offices, stated that the rally would disturb the peaceful environment of the state and would incite communal violence. It later denied permission for the rally and politics over the issue gained momentum, which reached court.
