Lucknow, February 20: Senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leaders have been called out for allegedly showing insensitive behaviour at the funeral of a jawan who died during an encounter with terrorists in Jammu and Kashmir. Furious relatives of the martyr slammed Union minister Satyapal Singh, Uttar Pradesh minister Sidharth Nath Singh and Meerut BJP lawmaker Rajendra Agarwal and asked them to remove their shoes at the funeral ceremony.
A video of the last rites of Ajay Kumar, who was among four army men killed in an encounter with Jaish-e-Mohammad terrorists in Pulwama, has surfaced. In the video, a member of the soldier's family is seen shouting at BJP leaders and asking them to be sensitive. The leaders then apologise with folded hands and remove their shoes, which were taken away. Four days after an attack on a CRPF convoy in Pulwama, an encounter between security forces and terrorists belonging to Pakistan-based Jaish-e-Mohammed broke out in the district on February 18. While security forces managed to kill three terrorists including the mastermind of the February 14 Pulwama attack, four security personnel including a major lost their lives in the gun-fight.
27-year-old Ajay Kumar was from the Bassi Tikri village in Meerut in western Uttar Pradesh. He was father to a two-year-old boy. His father was also in the Army. He joined the Army in 2011. Besides Kumar, Major Vibhuti Shankar Dhoundiyal, Hawaldar Sheo Ram and Sepoys Hari Singh died during the encounter.
