New Delhi, December 13: A Gujarat BJP leader has joined the fray of trolls on social media taking jibe at the "MA History" qualifications of newly appointed RBI Governor Shaktikanta Das. Jay Narayan Vyas, a former State Cabinet Minister, created buzz on Twitter by poking fun at Das, saying "hope he doesn't make RBI history".

Speaking to reporters, Vyas said he is not opposed to Das being given the charge of the central bank, but fears whether he commands acceptance among the international  community as his predecessors did. Twitter Goes Berserk Over RBI Governor's Qualifications.

"The New RBI Governor Das’s educational qualification is MA (History ) . Hope and Pray he doesn’t make RBI also a History .May God Bless the New Arrival !! (Sic),” tweeted Das, who was part of the Gujarat Cabinet when Narendra Modi was the Chief Minister.

Vyas later clarified his remarks while speaking to news agency ANI. To manage RBI you have to have a fair knowledge of the domestic and international economy. I respect IAS, the issue is that they’re exposed to a little of many things but the acceptance among the international community which earlier Governors commanded (is not there),” he said.

"I sympathise with Shaktikanta Das, and he has a Master’s degree in history. He will have to pull out a lot more at his age that is near retirement. He has to control and steer the RBI and answer issues like the use of RBI reserves,” Vyas further added.

Das, the 25th RBI Governor, took over the operations on Wednesday -- three days after his Urjit Patel resigned.

Patel, who is the first RBI chief to quit since 1990, had last month expressed his differences with the Finance Ministry over the sharing of central bank's corpus funds.

Das, while addressing press after taking charge, said he would not comment on the erstwhile issues with the Centre. He, however, added, that all steps will be taken by him to protect the RBI's "autonomy".
