The Supreme Court on Tuesday directed the Gujarat government to pay a compensation of Rs 50 lakh to gangrape survivour Bilkis Bano. The top court while hearing Bano’s plea, also asked the state government to provide the rape survivor with a government job and accommodation as per rules.

A bench of Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi, Justice Deepak Gupta and Justice Sanjiv Khanna asked the Gujarat government to inform it about the action taken. The next hearing was scheduled for today, i.e April 23. Earlier, Bano had rejected the Gujarat government's offer of Rs 5 lakh interim compensation. Bilkis Yakub Rasool was 19 years old and pregnant when she was gang-raped during the 2002 Gujarat riots. The horrifying incidents occurred in Randhikpur village near Dahod on March 3, 2002, when she and her family were attacked by a mob.
