New Delhi, September 30: The Supreme Court on Monday, September 30, directed Gujarat government to pay a compensation of Rs 50 lakh to 2002 Gujarat riots victim Bilkis Bano within two weeks. A bench headed by Chief Justice of India (CJI) Ranjan Gogoi also ordered the state government to provide her with a job and accommodation in the next two weeks. 2002 Gujarat Riots: Out of 23, Four Acquitted by Gujarat High Court in Godhra Case.

Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, appearing for the Gujarat government, had sought to seek a review of the April 2019 order by the apex court. In April, the court had awarded Rs 50 lakh compensation to Bano, who was gang-raped in Dahod's Randhikpur village post-Godhra riots.

A special court in Mumbai had awarded life sentence to eleven men for raping Bano, who was pregnant at the time of the crime and killing seven of her family members during the riots. The trial court had acquitted five policemen, including RS Bhagora, who were booked for dereliction of duty in the high-profile case.

After their acquittal was challenged, the Bombay High Court had in 2017 reversed the lower court order and convicted these five policemen under sections 218 (not performing their duties) and 201 (tampering of evidence) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

The top court had on July 10, 2017, dismissed the appeals of Bhagora and the other policemen against the HC order, saying there was "clear-cut evidence" against them.
