Bijnor, August 27: A 55-year-old woman allegedly died of a panic attack on August 26 in Uttar Pradesh, after a team of UP Police reportedly conducted a raid at her house in search of stored beef (cow meat). The woman, named Razia, was a resident of the Khatai village in Bijnor. The raid, conducted after the police reportedly received an anonymous tip, was carried out under the suspected violation of the Uttar Pradesh Prevention of Cow Slaughter Act, 1955, which prohibits cow slaughter and the sale of beef or beef products, except for medicinal purposes.

Nasim, Razia's son, alleged that four constables stormed into their house and misbehaved with his mother. Nasim said the police upturned their house, displacing items in search of the alleged stored beef. However, Nasim claimed that they never stored anything illegal and banned by the government, implying no beef was stored either. He blamed the police's harsh behaviour during the raid to have induced a panic attack in Razia, after which she was rushed to the local clinic. However, on reaching the clinic, the doctor pronounced Razia dead. UP Shocker: 18-Year-Old Polytechnic Student Dies by Suicide in Barabanki After Landlord Denies Use of Fan in Room; Probe Underway.

As per The Indian Express, Abhishek Jha, Superintendent of Bijnor Police, had sent the four constables to raid Razia's premises but they did not find beef or any other objectionable item in her house. The police have started an inquiry and a probe was ordered to identify the role of the alleged informant, who tipped the police of beef storage at Razia's house. The Bijnor police stated that necessary legal action would be taken against the informant for providing falsified and biased information and misleading the police. Meanwhile, Samajwadi Party's Nagina MLA, Manjoj Kumar Paras, demanded punitive action against the policemen who raided Razia's house and allegedly misbehaved with her. The MLA took a delegation of local leaders and Muslim clerics to SP Jha's office. "As the representative of my constituency, it is my responsibility to ensure that the police or anti-social elements harass none of any caste or community," said Paras, as per The Indian Express. On the contrary, the Station House Officer (SHO) of Bijnor's Kirtarpur police station, Jai Bhagwan Singh, claimed that the police were not responsible for Razia's death, as she was an asthma patient undergoing treatment for it.
