In a major blow to Bihar's infrastructure, five bridges have collapsed in the past eleven days, raising concerns about construction standards and oversight. RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav on Saturday criticised the Bihar government sharply over the recent series of bridge collapses in the state. “Congratulations! Due to the double power of the double-engine government in Bihar, a mere 5 bridges have collapsed in just 9 days. Araria, June 18:

A segment of a bridge spanning the Bakra River collapsed on June 18. Fortunately, no injuries or fatalities were reported. The bridge, constructed by the state government, was not yet open to the public as the approach roads were still under construction. This incident marks yet another setback for the bridge, which has faced similar issues in the past.

Siwan, June 22:

In the early hours of June 22, a minor bridge in Siwan district collapsed, as confirmed by District Magistrate Mukul Kumar Gupta. This incident marks the second bridge collapse in Bihar within a week. East Champaran, June 23:

This incident is the third bridge collapse in Bihar within a week, raising serious concerns about the safety and quality of infrastructure projects in the region.

Kishanganj, June 26:

On Wednesday night, another bridge succumbed to structural failure, marking the fourth such incident in Bihar within just 10 days. The latest collapse involved a bridge spanning the Kankai-Maria river in the Digghalbank block of Kishanganj district. This unfortunate event adds to the growing list of recent bridge collapses in the state, raising serious concerns about the safety and durability of Bihar’s infrastructure.

Madhubani, June 28: 

A segment of a bridge under construction over the Bhutahi River in Madhubani district collapsed on June 28. This marks the fifth bridge collapse in Bihar within just 11 days. The latest bridge, measuring 77 meters in length, saw a section of its long girder between two pillars collapsed. This bridge, being built under the Prime Minister's Rural Road Scheme by Bihar's Rural Development Department, had an estimated cost of around Rs 3 crore.

In light of recent bridge collapses, the state government’s rural works department convened a review meeting earlier this week to evaluate the condition of bridges and culverts across the state. Officials have been tasked with submitting a comprehensive report within a week. The frequent collapses have sparked sharp criticism from opposition leaders, who are demanding a thorough investigation and appropriate action against those responsible.
