Mumbai, September 5: A portion of Rajiv Gandhi flyover in Maharashtra’s Bhiwandi area has been collapsed. No casualties have been reported yet. However, earlier this month, the same flyover was shut for repair work. In February, a large crack was detected on the bridge after chunks of concrete fell on a four-wheeler that was passing under it. The car was damaged severely, but no one was injured in that incident.

The three-km-long flyover on Bhiwandi-Kalyan road was built by the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority. It runs from Rajiv Gandhi Chowk to Saibaba temple. The road connects to Bhiwandi bypass road, which leads to the Mumbai-Nashik highway.

Yesterday, a portion of a  40-year-old Majherhat bridge collapsed in South Kolkata, crushing a man to death. The rescue operation is currently underway to clear the debris. On July this year, Gokhale bridge in Andheri also collapsed. An official inquiry conducted into the collapse held officials and staff employed by the Railways responsible for the fatal accident which claimed one life and left four others with grievous injuries.
