Pune, November 26: The Pune Sessions Court on Monday granted 90 days extension to police for filing chargesheet against four accused Varavara Rao, Sudha Bhardwaj, Arun Ferreira and Vernon Gonsalves. Earlier on Friday, the police had sought the permission from the court to investigate the Bhima Koregaon violence and activists’ involvement with it.

Investigating the matter of Bhima Koregaon violence case, the police had arrested the four activists in their raids in various cities on August 28 for alleged links with the Maoists. The Bhima Koregoan violence erupted on January 1, a day after Elgaar Parishad organised a meeting at the place. Police have accused that after the event only, the violence took place in Bhima Koregoan. So far 22 people have been booked under various cases of the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA) and IPC. Several others have been put under house arrest.

The violence erupted on the day when people in the vicinity gathered to mark 100 years of Bhima Koregoan battle, in which one person died and several others injured. With the violence proceeded, the police filed 58 cases against 162 people in January.
