New Delhi, January 25: Former President Pranab Mukherjee along with social activist Nanaji Deshmukh and playback singer Dr Bhupen Hazarika on Friday were conferred with India’s highest honour, Bharat Ratna. Deshmukh and Hazarika were awarded the highest honour posthumously. The announcement was made on the eve of Republic Day 2019.

Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik also congratulated Mukherjee for receiving the award. Patnaik also remembered Hazarika and Deshmukh in his tweet.

Meanwhile, the Former President thanked expressed gratitude after receiving the award. The Bharat Ratna is the highest civilian award of the Republic of India instituted in 1954. The award is conferred in recognition of the exceptional performance of the highest order in various fields. The recommendations for the Bharat Ratna are made by the Prime Minister to the President, with a maximum of three nominees being awarded per year.
