New Delhi, January 25: Former President Pranab Mukherjee along with social activist Nanaji Deshmukh and playback singer Dr Bhupen Hazarika on Friday were conferred with India’s highest honour, Bharat Ratna. Deshmukh and Hazarika were awarded the highest honour posthumously. The announcement was made on the eve of Republic Day 2019.
There is a flood of congratulatory messages from Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Ministers and other top politicians and famous personalities.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated Pranab Mukherjee for getting Bharat Ratna. He also appreciated the contribution of Deshmukh and Hazarika in their respective fields.

Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik also congratulated Mukherjee for receiving the award. Patnaik also remembered Hazarika and Deshmukh in his tweet.

Meanwhile, the Former President thanked expressed gratitude after receiving the award. He tweeted, "It is with a deep sense of humility and gratitude to the people of India that I accept this great honour #BharatRatna bestowed upon me. The Bharat Ratna is the highest civilian award of the Republic of India instituted in 1954. The award is conferred in recognition of the exceptional performance of the highest order in various fields. The recommendations for the Bharat Ratna are made by the Prime Minister to the President, with a maximum of three nominees being awarded per year.
