Bhopal, September 5: Madhya Pradesh is on high alert ahead of the September 6 'Bharat Bandh' call given out by upper caste groups to protest against the SC/ST Amendment Bill passed in Parliament last month. Section 144 of the Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC) has been imposed in five districts of Madhya Pradesh.

Prohibitory orders under CrPC have been imposed in Morena, Shivpuri and Bhind, all three in Gwalior-Chambal region, as well as in Ashok Nagar district in view of the proposed bandh. These districts had witnessed violence during the Dalit protests in April this year.

Here's what you need to know about the bandh call

The September 6 Bharat Bandh has been proposed by certain upper caste groups to protest against the SC/ST Amendment Bill. Brahma Samagam Sawarna Jankalyan Sangathan national president Dharmendra Sharma said that about 150 organisations of upper castes and OBCs would participate in the Bharat bandh against the amendments in SC/ST Act.

“We will protest peacefully on September 6. Through this protest, we will demand withdrawal of this black law. All the sections except SC/ST are affected due to this amendment. We will also write letters to all MPs of the country,” Sharma said.

There have been protests against the amendments in SC/ST Bill in parts of Madhya Pradesh in the past one week. Protesters staged demonstrations outside the bungalows of Union minister Narendra Singh Tomar at Gwalior and Member of Parliament (MP) Bhagirath Prasad at Bhind. The protesters also staged a demonstration at Higher Education Minister Jaibhan Singh Pawaiya’s bungalow at Gwalior.

Meanwhile, there have been fake WhatsApp messages circulated that claim that anti-corruption crusader Anna Hazare will also be a part of the bandh, a claim that has been outrightly denied by Anna's supporters. "Anna Hazare opposes quota for Dalits, will participate in Bharat Bandh protest on September 6," a viral image that looks like a still taken from a show on Zee News claims. Such fake pictures are being widely shared on WhatsApp, Facebook and other social platforms.
