Bharat Bandh on January 8, 2020: What Will Remain Open and Closed in Pan-India Strike Called by Trade Unions

New Delhi, January 6: A nation-wide bandh has been declared by trade unions on Wednesday, January 8, 2020. The unions said that they will observe a total bandh on Wednesday against the policies of the government and a number of bankers are expected to join the strike. The call for a nation-wide strike came a day after the union leaders met the labour minister to hold talks about government's anti-labour policies. Reports said that Trade unions INTUC, AITUC, HMS, CITU, AIUTUC, TUCC, SEWA, AICCTU, LPF, UTUC are all supporting the bandh to be held on January 8. The Union which have called for bandh have also extended their solidarity to Anti-CAA and NRC protests. Besides the bandh announced by the trade unions, close to 60 students organisations and educational bodies have also announced their support to the strike. This is expected to affect the banking services across various cities.

• Banking services are expected to be hit as many bank employees have announced their support to the bandh. Customers visiting the bank branches for withdrawal or deposit may face difficulties. However, online transactions will be open.
• Affiliates groups of INTUC (Indian National Trade Union Congress) will be closed on January 8, impacting work in several sectors.
• Affiliates groups of AITUC (All India Trade Union Congress) will remain suspended on January, impacting work at several organisations.
• Affiliates of groups such as HMS, CITU, AIUTUC, TUCC, SEWA, AICCTU, LPF, and UTUC will also remain closed and work where these unions are functional will be affected.
• Several educational institutions as close to 60 eductional bodies have announced their support to the strike.
• Public transport services such as train, buses and metro will remain functional during Bharat Bandh protests.
• Autorickshaws and taxis will ply unless their unions take last minute call to participate in the stir. Local trains in Mumbai and metro services in Delhi and other major cities will function normally.

“We expect participation of not less than 25 crore of working people in the forthcoming National General Strike on January 8, 2020, to be followed by many more actions seeking reversal of the anti-worker, anti-people, anti-national policies of the Government,” the 10 central trade unions (CTUs) said in a joint statement.
