"CPIM has no ideology. Planting bombs on railway tracks is 'gundagardi'. In the name of movement, commuters are being beaten up and stones are being pelted. This is 'dadagiri', not a movement. I condemn this Bharat Bandh," said West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee. "Bandhs called by them(Left parties) earlier were rejected. They want to get cheap publicity by calling bandh and hurling bombs on buses. Instead of gaining this publicity, political death is better," she added.
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee condemned the shutdown enforced by Left groups in the state, blaming the communist rivals for the hardship being faced by common people due to lack of transportation services.

"State government supports today's Bharat Bandh call of different trade unions. Government at the Centre is an anti-labour government," said Maharashtra PWD Minister and Congress veteran Ashok Chavan.

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday extended support to the all-India strike called by central trade unions. He blamed the "anti-people" policies of the Centre for the rising unemployment and weakening condition of public sector units.

New Delhi, January 8: Ten central trade unions have claimed that approximately 25 crore people will participate in the nationwide strike today. This strike is taking place to protest against the "anti-people" policies of the government.

The trade unions have also condemned the violence on JNU campus and across other university campuses. Besides condemning the violence in college campuses, they also expressed dissatisfaction over no Indian labour conference being organised since July 2015 and other matters.
Services at several banks could be affected today as six bank unions will participate in the strike. So customers can face problems as banking services like ATMs and branch services will be affected due to the strike. However, those using NEFT and IIMPS services won't be affected by the strike.
The government has further warned central trade unions of "consequences" if they go on a proposed 24-hour nationwide strike. According to an order issued by the Ministry of Personnel said, "Any employee going on strike in any form would face the consequences which, besides deduction of wages, may also include appropriate disciplinary action."
