Bharat Bandh Effect in Mumbai: Shops Shut in Several Areas, Public Transport Largely Unaffected

The Opposition-organised Bharat Bandh on Monday was partially seen in Mumbai as local trains were reported to be running normally, with about 15 minutes of delay in services.

In Mumbai, while shops were shut, public transport didn't appear to be hit by the Bharat Bandh. Congress, MNS and NCP workers who tried to block rail and road traffic were detained by the police.

Mumbai, September 10: The Opposition-organised Bharat Bandh on Monday was partially seen in Mumbai as local trains were reported to be running normally, with about 15 minutes of delay in services. Mumbai Metro witnessed some disturbance due to protests by MNS works at DN Nagar metro station. Commuters complained of a 15-minute delay in metro services. The Opposition Congress also led a rail roko protest at the Andheri railway station today. Follow Live updates on Bharat Bandh here.

Maharashtra Congress President Ashok Chavan and Mumbai Congress President Sanjay Nirupam led thousands of activists to stage a protest outside the Andheri station bus depot, and later they got down on the railway tracks, shouting anti-government slogans.

The Mumbai Police on Sunday had served a notice to Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) workers under section 149, stating if any law and order situation arises in Mumbai during the Bharat Bandh on September 10, they will be held responsible.

Several leaders including former ministers Naseem Khan, Manikrao Thakre, Suresh Shetty, joined the agitation as police maintained strict security at Andheri.

Public transport on roads was reported to be normal in the morning hours as autorickshaw and bus drivers refused to participate in the bandh. However, according to reports, shops downed shutters in some areas which were dominated by the Congress and MNS. Some petrol pumps were also reportedly shut in Mumbai as well as Thane due to the Bharat Bandh call given out by the Opposition.

The Congress workers also reportedly asked traders to shut shops in Dadar, Andheri and other areas. MNS workers in Mumbai forcefully shut down shops and establishments at Bharatmata Junction Naka, Parel. Some people complained of autorickshaws unwilling to ply to Andheri due to protests.

Opposition parties have called for a nationwide shutdown to protest against rising petrol and diesel prices. The impact of the bandh was also seen in other parts of the country including Bihar, Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh and Delhi.
