Kolkata/Mumbai, June 22: A total of 9 persons were arrested over the last couple of days for allegedly betting in the ongoing ICC Cricket World Cup 2019. While five among them were nabbed in Kolkata, four others were apprehended in a separate case in Thane, located close to Mumbai.
In Kolkata, two persons - Sanjay Soni (50) and Shibu Kumar Shaw (22) - were first arrested from Rishra in Hooghly district after the police received a tip-off of their alleged betting during Thursday's Australia vs Bangladesh match. After interrogating them, three more individuals - Binod Kamaria (58), Vijay Malik (42), Dipak Soni (48) were apprehended.
The accused have been booked under (Criminal Conspiracy) and 420 (cheating and fraud) of the Indian Penal Code, along with provisions of the WB Gambling and Prize Competition Act.
Two laptops, eight mobile phones, one TV set and cash over Rs 88,000 were seized in the raid in Hooghly.
Meanwhile, the Central Crime Unit (CCU) of Thane Crime Branch has arrested four individuals of Jitu Manglani (35), Pradip Rohera (40), Manish Chetwani (36) and Dileep Mishra (38).
The accused were allegedly betting during the New Zealand vs South Africa match on Wednesday. Several accessories have been seized in the raid by Thane police.
