Chandigarh, January 18: Prime Minister Narendra Modi led government launched Beti Bachao Beti Padhao campaign in Haryana in 2015 to address the declining child sex ratio and girl education. The Beti Bachao Beti Padhao campaign appears to have made a significant impact in Haryana which witnessed improvement in sex ration for the third consecutive year after the launch of the programme.

According to figures released by the state government on Wednesday, the sex ratio jumped to 924 girls for every 1,000 boys by December 31, 2018. In 2017, the figure was 917. In 2016, it was 900 girls for 1000 boys. Haryana, which is known for its poor sex ratio, had an abysmal 832 girls for every 1,000 boys in 2012. Karnal district topped in the state, recording a ratio of 979. Its sex ratio in 2012 was 797.

In the 2011 Census, Jhajjar, Rewari and Kurukshetra had brought national shame for the state by recording the lowest sex ratio in the country, at 781, 780 and 743, respectively. However, by the end of 2018, the sex ratio in three districts improved to 904, 911, and 942, respectively. Kurukshetra district, which recorded the lowest sex ratio in 2011, emerged as the best performer in 2018, improving by 99 points.

The state government credited the Beti Bachao Beti Padhao campaign for the significant improvement in the sex ratio. "Teamwork has brought good results. Effective roles played by deputy commissioners and SPs, and coordination between various departments in implementation of various schemes, has worked out really well," Rakesh Gupta, the additional principal secretary to Haryana chief minister Manohar Lal Khattar, was quoted as saying.
