BEST Workers’ Joy Cut Short After Receiving Salary Increment As Well As Pay Cut for Going on 9-Day Strike

Mumbai, February 14: The BEST workers who recently returned to work after a nine-day long strike in January, 2019, received their payslips on Wednesday but were shocked to see that their salaries were deducted for the nine days that they were on strike in January. However, it was a moment of mixed emotions for the employees as they also received a hike of Rs 4,000 in their salary. 13,000 junior grade staffers received the salary hike of Rs 4,000 reported The Times of India.

A junior staffer was quoted saying by the paper that though the employees were glad to see the increment in their salaries, they were disappointed to find that the salaries for the days they were on strike.

The Bombay High Court had sought response from all the parties in connection with the indefinite strike that was announced by BEST employees in Mumbai.

The high court had asked all the parties to decide about the ongoing BEST strike and inform the court about their decision.

Finally, the 32,000 strong BEST work-force agreed to give up the strike after a 10 step increments to employees to be implemented from February 2019 was accepted and the demand of the merger of BEST budget with 'A' budget of BMC was accepted.

The BEST said that it would be incurring a burden of Rs 55 crore to fulfill the demand of hikes in salary of employees as per the agreement made before the Bombay High Court. Retired chief justice of Allahabad HC Ferdino Rebello was appointed as the mediator by the court to resolved the issue.
