Mumbai, June 26: The Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) in a major move has slashed the prices of bus services across Mumbai. The new prices will be likely to come into effect from the first week of July. The BEST committee on Tuesday took some major steps to make the public transport system more comfortable, accessible and affordable for all. Mumbai: BEST to Introduce 80 Electric Buses After Bombay HC Gives Nod to Move.

According to the new fare slab, the fixed minimum fare is at Rs five (up to 5 km) and the maximum fare at Rs 20 for anywhere in Mumbai. Air Conditioned bus travel will cost Rs 6 for up to 5 km, while Rs 25 would be the maximum for over 15 km journey. The fare restructuring was recommended by Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) in a bid to revive the public transportation system. From 15 fare slabs, the BEST had brought it to four affordable slabs, slashing the maximum fare by Rs 42 on the upper end. Sharing the deets, Yuva Sena, the youth wing of Shiv Sena, President Aaditya Uddhav Thackeray said that the "bus fleet is being doubled to about 6000 buses. 500 buses would be fully electric buses, emission-free."

The Sena leader also said that efforts are on to make common bus pass for Metro and Railways and an application for making payments and to check the estimated time of arrival (ETA) and traffic situation for BEST riders. Bus passes are also made cheaper with a monthly pass (for 5 km travel) costing Rs 250 while quarterly Rs 750, similarly for AC monthly pass it will cost Rs 350 and Rs 900 for quarterly.
