Bengaluru, October 6: Following a disturbing incident in Chickpet, City Market police have arrested two employees of Mamatha Arts store for allegedly assaulting a 52-year-old man who requested they learn Kannada. The victim, Syed Rafieq, was reportedly attacked after he asked the staff to show him designs for a “kanchina deepada kamba,” or lamp stand. Tensions escalated when the employees, unable to understand him, responded with hostility. Rafieq claims he was punched in the face and struck multiple times with a brass plate by one of the assailants.
The case unfolded on September 30 when Rafieq visited the Mamatha Arts store with his wife. Initially attempting to communicate in Hindi, he sought assistance but found the employees struggling to comprehend his request. After several failed attempts to explain himself, Rafieq asked the staff to consider learning Kannada, which further inflamed the situation. According to a report by the Times of India, the employees’ hostile reaction set off a chain of events that would lead to the violent confrontation. As tensions mounted, one of the employees, identified as Aravind, verbally attacked Rafieq, questioning why he should learn Kannada to serve customers. The argument escalated when Rafieq insisted that it was reasonable for them to understand the local language while operating a business in Karnataka. In a fit of rage, Aravind allegedly punched Rafieq in the face, while another employee, Shesh Kumar, grabbed a brass plate and struck Rafieq multiple times. Following the brutal assault, Rafieq managed to flee the store and sought help from bystanders. He later reported the incident to the City Market police, who promptly arrested Shesh Kumar and Aravind. The accused have been charged under various sections of the BNS for causing hurt and intentionally provoking a breach of peace.
