Bengaluru, November 10: A couple’s seemingly innocent garden video on Facebook has landed them in trouble after they unknowingly showcased ganja saplings among their plants. Urmila Kumari, an active social media user, posted a video on October 18 featuring various potted plants in their Sadashivanagar home, including two pots with ganja saplings. The post caught the attention of netizens, who alerted the police about the illegal plants. Following the viral Facebook post, the police were alerted to the presence of ganja saplings in the couple's garden.
On November 5, the Sadashivanagar police raided the couple’s residence in MSR Nagar. When questioned, the couple initially denied any involvement in growing ganja plants. However, after further inspection, the police found uprooted saplings in their dustbin, weighing 54 grams. The couple, during questioning, admitted to growing the plants with the intent to sell them for profit, according to a report from The New Indian Express. Urmila Kumari, who had posted the video, initially denied sharing any such content, but when her phone was examined, the police confirmed that the video had been uploaded on October 18. The video showed nearly two dozen plants in the couple's garden, but it was the ganja saplings that garnered the most attention. The police also seized the couple’s mobile phones, which they will analyse further to determine if there is any connection to drug peddling activities. As reported by the Times of India, the authorities suspect that the couple was involved in cultivating ganja for commercial distribution. Upon the police raid, Urmila’s relative, who was present in the fast-food joint owned by Sagar, reportedly alerted the couple about the police’s arrival. By the time the police entered their home, Urmila had already removed the plants from the pots and thrown them in the dustbin in an attempt to destroy the evidence.
The couple’s fast-food business, located on the ground floor of their building, had no connection to the crime, but police are continuing their investigation to determine whether they were part of a larger network of drug suppliers. The couple was arrested on charges under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act for allegedly cultivating ganja with the intent to sell. They were released on station bail, but the investigation remains ongoing.
