Bengaluru, November 3: A man in Bengaluru has been awarded INR 60,000 compensation by a consumer court after a matrimonial portal failed to find a suitable bride for his son. Vijaya Kumar KS approached Dilmil Matrimony with hopes of securing a match for his son Balaji, paying a fee of INR 30,000 based on their assurances. Despite repeated visits and follow-ups, no profiles were provided. Instead, the portal's staff allegedly verbally abused him when he demanded a refund. The court ultimately ruled in favour of Kumar, citing deficiencies in service and unfair trade practices.
According to a report by the Indian Express, Vijaya Kumar KS, a resident of M S Nagar, sought assistance from Dilmil Matrimony on March 17 to find a potential bride for his son, Balaji. After submitting the necessary documents and photographs, Kumar paid the required fee of INR 30,000, with the assurance that a suitable match would be found within 45 days. However, as the deadline approached without any profiles being presented, Kumar began to feel frustrated and disappointed with the lack of progress. Kumar made several visits to the Dilmil Matrimony office, where he encountered unhelpful responses and was often asked to wait without any resolution. On April 30, during a particularly contentious visit, he requested a refund of the fee due to the service's failure to deliver on its promises. Instead of addressing his concerns, the staff allegedly resorted to verbal abuse, exacerbating Kumar’s distress and leading him to consider legal action. After issuing a legal notice on May 9 and receiving no response, Kumar decided to escalate the matter to the consumer court. The court's ruling on October 28 highlighted the clear deficiencies in the services provided by Dilmil Matrimony, declaring that the portal had engaged in unfair trade practices. As a result, Kumar was awarded INR 30,000 for the refund, INR 20,000 for the service deficiency, INR 5,000 for mental agony, and an additional INR 5,000 for legal expenses.
