Belgaum Border Dispute: Effigies of BS Yediyurappa, Uddhav Thackeray Burnt in Kolhapur and Belagavi

Belgaum, December 30: Kagwad, a town located in Belgaum district of Karnataka near Maharashtra-Karnataka border, witnessed protests from the Shiv Sena activists and Karnataka Rakshana Vedike (KRV). The members of KRV burnt an effigy of Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackery. In Maharashtra too, Sena activists burnt an effigy of BS Yediyurappa and shouted slogans against pro-Kannada organisation. The Shiv Sena activists had stopped the screen of Kannada movie in Kolhapur on Sunday. The bus services from Kolhapur to Karnataka was also halted as a precautionary measure by the police.
Maharashtra claims Belgaum, also known as Belagavi, that has a majority of Marathi-speaking population, but is a district of Karnataka. Pro-Kannada activists have strongly opposed this stance.
Earlier this month, Maharashtra CM Uddhav Thackeray had appointed ministers Eknath Shinde and Chhagan Bhujbal as co-ordinators to oversee his government's efforts to expedite the matter related to the boundary dispute with Karnataka.
