Beed, December 20: In a shocking case of honour killing, a man in Beed district of Maharashtra, killed his sister's husband in a broad daylight, said police on Thursday. The accused was unhappy with his sister because she had married someone without their family's approval and in order to teach her a lesson, he slashed the victim, identified as Sumit Shivaji Waghare, in front of her eyes. The couple, Waghare and Bhagyashree Lande, were studying in Aditya College of Engineering, Telgaon area. The duo had fallen for each other and decided to marry two months ago against the wishes of both families. Extremely angry over this, Balaji Lande, the accused with his friend allegedly killed Sumit with the help of sharp weapons. The incident took place when the couple had just walked out of the college after appearing for their examinations. "What was my crime? That I married the person I loved and who was my college mate? If the police don't nab him soon, I shall end my life," a tearful Bhagyashree told media.
Police officials have registered a case against the accused under the various sections of Indian Penal Code and a manhunt has been launched to nab the killers. According to a report by the National Crime Records Bureau, around 251 cases of honour killings were reported in India in 2015.
