Two women were injured in a bear attack while using the restroom in Nuapada, Odisha. They have been allotted INR 5,000 in compensation, and drones are monitoring the area for further activity.
Bhubaneswar, September 16: Near Kotribahal village in Nuapada district, two women were injured in a bear attack while they were using the restroom outdoors on Sunday, September 15. The women were admitted to the headquarter's hospital. Reportedly, they are in stable condition. Authorities are using drones equipped with thermal cameras to monitor the area for any further bear activity.
The injured women, identified as Jini Bhoe and Chaumani Khetki, were attacked in the morning. A compensation of INR 5000 is allotted to the individuals injured in bear attacks, told Ajiz Khan, the Divisional Forest Officer (DFO) for the Khariar Territorial Division. Speaking to Times of India, Ajiz Khan, added that bears have been frequently straying into the area where the incident occurred due to its proximity to the sanctuary. Khan noted that the bear involved in the attack appears to have retreated back into the forest. He further explained that authorities are employing drones equipped with thermal cameras to keep a close watch on the region for any additional bear activity near human settlements. In a similar incident in December 2023, a bear that wandered into Nuapada town left at least three women injured. The victims include Mukhi Maharatha , along with sanitation workers Gita Netam and Hina Sunani. Sources report that around 5 a.m., the bear crossed NH-353 and entered the town. Mukhi was attacked while she was plucking flowers near the SP office, suffering severe injuries to her right ear. The bear then proceeded to assault Gita and Hina, who were cleaning the streets nearby. Passersby quickly intervened, chasing the bear away. The injured women were promptly taken to the district headquarters hospital for medical treatment.
