The election for mayor and deputy mayor of BBMP was necessitated following the terms of Sampath Raj and Padmavathi Narasimhamurthy as the mayor and deputy mayor respectively ended on Thursday. In the mayoral election, 259 people will cast their vote for the mayoral election, which includes 198 councillors, MLAs, MLCs and MPs. 130 votes are required to get elected as mayor and deputy mayor. While the BJP has 122 councillors in its fold, including 101 of its own, the Congress, along with JD(S) has 137 votes.
Ahead of the election, the Congress shifted five independent corporators to a resort. There are eight independent corporators. The BJP is not only the largest party in the Buhrat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike, it also has the maximum number of MLAs in Karnataka Assembly. The party has 104 legislators, while the Congress has 79 and the JD(S) 36.
