Bareilly: Girl Suffering From Abdominal Pain for 5 Years Visits UP Hospital For Check-Up, Doctors Find 2 Kg Hair in Her Stomach

In a rare medical case, doctors at Bareilly district hospital successfully removed a 2.5 kg hairball from the stomach of a 24-year-old woman named Radha. Suffering from severe stomach pain for over a year, Radha, a resident of Subhashnagar, was diagnosed after a CT scan revealed the large mass.

Bareilly, October 6: In a startling case from Bareilly, Uttar Pradesh, a 24-year-old girl underwent surgery to remove a two-kilogram hairball from her stomach. The woman, a resident of Subhashnagar Kargaina, had been suffering from severe abdominal pain for five years. Despite spending over two lakh rupees on private hospitals, her condition remained undiagnosed until she visited the district hospital.

According to a report in Amar Ujala, physicians at the hospital recommended a CT scan, which revealed a mass in her stomach. She was admitted on September 22, and on September 26, surgeons successfully removed the hairball. The medical team included senior surgeon Dr. M.P. During post-operative counseling, it was discovered that the woman suffers from trichotillomania, a psychological disorder where individuals compulsively pull out and eat their hair. She had been consuming her hair since the age of 16, leading to the accumulation over 15 years. The woman was discharged on Friday after her condition improved. Her counseling will continue for several months, and her family has been advised to monitor her closely. According to Dr. Alka Sharma, AD SIC, there is no record of a similar surgery in the district hospital in the past 25 years.
