Lucknow, May 28: At least eight people have been confirmed dead after consuming spurious liquor in Uttar Pradesh's Barabanki. Reports claim that the deceased belonged to the same family. The death toll is feared to rise further as nearly a dozen people who consumed the illicit alcohol were rushed to the hospital.

The UP police has launched a probe to nab the illegal booze seller, its supplier and producer. The tragedy came to the fore on Monday, after eight people were admitted for consuming the spurious liquor. "I have got information that eight people have died in Ramnagar. Today, 3 people were admitted at the hospital out of which one person has passed away," said Sadar Badel, Lekhpal.

The incident brings back to memory the hooch tragedy in February this year, when a total of 97 deaths were reported in parts of Uttarakhand and Uttar Pradesh.

An inquiry had revealed that the spurious liquor was manufactured in the hill-state where most of the casualties were reported, and nearly 30 pouches were brought to UP's Saharanpur for sale.
