Bangladesh India Joint Rivers Commission Meeting Today Postponed, Delays Exchange of Data on Six Common Rivers

India and Bangladesh have 54 common rivers, but they have only one relevant treaty signed in 1996, which sees the sharing of the water of Ganga river. The entire purpose of JRC was to resolve conflicts about sharing of waters of trans-boundary rivers.

New Delhi, December 18: The Bangladesh India Joint Rivers Commission (JRC) talks scheduled to start from today was postponed at the last minute, delaying the exchange of data on six common rivers, which was last updated 34 years ago.

The six common rivers include the Muhuri, Monu, Dharla, Khowai, Gumti and Dudhkumar. Both the countries first exchanged river flow data of these six rivers in 1985. According to a Daily Star report, the water-sharing agreement between two rivers- Teesta and Feni-were finalised in 2011, but no agreement was signed at that point in time.
