Ban on Firecrackers Across India? Supreme Court to Pronounce Verdict Today
The Supreme Court will pronounce its verdict on the plea for a ban on the manufacture and sale of firecrackers across the country today.
New Delhi, October 23: The Supreme Court on Tuesday will pronounce its verdict on the plea for a ban on the manufacture and sale of firecrackers across India. The bench of justices Ashok Bhushan and AK Sikri which has reserved its verdict on August 28 and would pronounce its judgement today. The top court had earlier said there is a need to be a balance between the right of livelihood to firecracker manufacturers and the right to good health of 130 crore people living in the country.
Firecrackers manufacturers, while defending themselves, said firecrackers shouldn't be fully banned but instead, should be regulated. They further added saying that crackers are not the sole reason for rising air pollution and there are many other reasons contributing towards it. Later, the court dismissed the plea by manufacturers who had sought permission for selling firecrackers two to three days before Diwali on 17 October 2017. During the hearing, the court had expressed the concern on rising of respiratory problems among the children due to the air pollution. The bench also cited that nearly 20-25 per cent of children suffer from respiratory problems due to the burning of firecrackers.
