Kolkata, Sept 16: A massive fire broke out past midnight at the Bargi Market, one of the busiest trading hubs of Kolkata. At least 30 fire tenders were at the spot, by the time this report was published, to douse the flames. No casualties were reported so far.

Mayor Sovan Chatterjee, who is overseeing the firefighting operation since the wee hours of the day, said the blaze erupted at 2:45am and spread to neighbouring buildings in the market.

The exact cause of fire is yet to be ascertained, the Mayor said, adding that the fire department suspect the source of flame to be the ground floor of one of the buildings located in the central part of the market.

All buildings in the Bagri Market house commercial establishments. Since the fire broke out midnight -- when all shops were closed -- no loss of life is expected.

Chatterjee, however, said the situation the fire department is yet to bring the blaze under control. "The firefighting operation is difficult here because of the number of buildings," he was reported as saying.

Traffic Restrictions Imposed:

Road connecting Rabindra Sarani with Canning Street have been clamped as the fire-fighting operation is underway. Traffic from MG Road to Brabourne Road has also been diverted, the traffic department said.

Among the establishments housed in Bagri Market include medicine shops, jewellery and cosmetics trading outlets, among others.

Bagri Market is located on the Canning Street, which is near to Burrabazar. The region is known as the financial hotspot of the Bengal capital.
