Prime Minister Narendra Modi rolled out the National Health Protection Mission or Ayushman Bharat Scheme on August 15 this year. A baby girl born on August 17 at the Kalpana Chawla Government Hospital in Haryana's Karnal district became the first beneficiary of the scheme.

Earlier too there was a controversy over the Ayushman Bharat scheme in Uttar Pradesh when reports surfaced that a state minister, some former MLAs and prominent businessmen figured in the list of beneficiaries even as the scheme is meant for the poor and the deprived.

The scheme will cover 10 crore households, falling at the bottom of the socio-economic census of 2011. Considering that a household has 5 members on an average, nearly 50 crore of India's 130-crore population will be covered under the scheme.
