New Delhi, January 29: In what is believed to be a big move in the Ayodhya matter, the Centre on Tuesday filed a petition in the Supreme Court seeking permission for release the 67-acre acquired land around the disputed Ram Janambhoomi Babri Masjid site to original owners. In its writ petition, the Centre said it had acquired 67 acres of land around the 2.77 acres disputed Ram Janambhoomi-Babri Masjid site. The Centre moved the top Court and sought permission to return 67 acres of land that it had acquired and hand over to Ramjanambhoomi Nyas.

The government also sought direction to release 67 acres acquired land out of which 0.313 acres is disputed land. This land is part of the 67 acres acquired by the central government in 1993 after the demolition of the Babri Masjid. In 1994, the top Court had upheld the acquisition and had ordered that the land shall remain with the Central government and shall not be released in anyone’s favour until the dispute is decided. The filing of the petition by the government comes a day after the Supreme Court delayed the hearing in the Ayodhya title suit. The hearing was called off as one of the judges was not available due to medical issues. According to details by Live Law, the Centre has filed a writ petition seeking modification of the court’s March 2003 judgement to restore the surplus land, which is not part of the dispute, to the trust, which was formed to promote and oversee the construction of a Ram temple. BJP leader Dr Subramanian Swamy in a tweet said the Centre has gone to Supreme Court in a WP to seek the release of the non-disputed part of RJB land of 67 acres to start immediate construction. "My meeting last evening with HM I had a discussion on my approach. According to reports, 14 appeals have been filed in the apex court against the 2010 Allahabad High Court judgement, delivered in four civil suits, that the 2.77-acre land be partitioned equally among three parties -- the Sunni Waqf Board, the Nirmohi Akhara and Ram Lalla.
