Sonarpur, May 21: A school teacher in West Bengal's Sonarpur received a gift which would have been a dream come true for an avid reader like him. A 30-year-old teacher who refused to accept dowry from his in-laws was surprised to receive a pile of books on his wedding day. Suryakanta Barik, when arrived in East Midnapore’s Khejuri to marry Priyanka Bej, he was surprised to find 1,000 books worth Rs 1 lakh, reported The Telegraph. “I had made it clear that I would not accept any dowry. When I arrived for the wedding, I was pleasantly surprised to find a huge pile of books as a gift,” Barik told to The Telegraph. The bride's family gifted him book as they were knowing that he loves to read. Not only him, but his wife Priyanka, a final-year student of Mugberia College, also loves reading books.
“My family knew that I don’t like the concept of marriages that involve giving or taking dowry. So I am very grateful to have a husband who understands that. My father also knew that I love to read. The gifted books were from some prominent authors like Rabindranath Tagore, Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay, Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay among others. To make this purchase, the bride's father and uncle had travelled to Kolkata to buy books from College Street shops and Udbodhan Karyalaya. The bride's family also requested all the relatives to not bring gifts but if they wished, they could bring books and flowers. The bridegroom happy over this unusual gift expressed his desire to open a small library at his home which would be accessible to his neighbours and relatives.
