New Delhi, November 12: Chief Justice of India (CJI) and Attorney General KK Venugopal had an argument in the Supreme Court after the former dismissed the latter's petition without hearing. AG Venugopal objected to the dismissal of his case, and in a surprise to many, CJI Gogoi reversed his decision and agreed to listen to the matter.

"I cannot think of any Supreme Court Bench dismissing a case without hearing the sides. Many clients come from faraway parts of the country, and the Chief Justice says dismissed?" Venugopal said while representing the Rajasthan government in a case involving the payment of interest in case of delay in depositing entry tax by a company. Justice Ranjan Gogoi Sworn-In as New Chief Justice of India; Here’s All You Need to Know About the New CJI.

A bench, headed by justice Gogoi, dismissed the case even before Venugopal could begin. "You cannot dismiss the petition. It is related to the revenue of a state. Why the CJI bench is hesitating to issue notice? I do not think the Chief Justice of India has read the petition," visibly furious Attorney General added, forcing the Chief Justice to respond.

"Do not presume we didn't see the file... We might have misread it but we read it," justice Gogoi retorted. Since he took over as the Chief Justice, justice Gogoi has been pitching for strict parameters for urgent mentioning and hearing of cases. Last month, a bench led by him, refused to give an early hearing to the title suit in the Ayodhya case.

The CJI has made it clear that no urgent hearing will take place in the Supreme Court until some criteria are fixed to decide what case needs to be heard urgently. Justice Gogoi is the first person from the Northeast to reach the top position of the judiciary.
